How do I measure my pond’s water volume?

How to Measure Pond Volume:
The formula used to calculate the volume of water depends on the shape of your pond. Use this table as a guide to determine the inputs you need to use our pond size calculator.

Square/Rectangle Circular / Oval
What you’ll need:
Rope/Twine
Electrical Tape
Metal/Wooden Stake
Weight
To start:
Tie one end of the rope to the stake and then secure the stake into the ground at the corner of the longest side of your pond.
To start:
Tie one end of the rope to the stake and then secure the stake into the ground at the edge of  your pond.
To get length & width:
Walk the side of the pond while holding the rope and then use a piece of electrical tape to mark off the distance to the end. Repeat for shorter side.
To get diameter:
Walk to the opposite side of your pond while holding the rope and then use a piece of electrical tape to mark the distance.*For oval or irregularly shaped ponds, take measurements from multiple locations and average them together.
To get average depth:
Tie a weight to the end of your rope and drop it to the bottom and then pull the rope taut before marking the rope. Repeat in at least 3 places and average the results.**For large ponds we recommend taking measurements from a boat.
Now you are ready to calculate your volume!
