Every season has its challenges! By following the dosing instructions provided on the Nualgi label you can have excellent results throughout the winter and spring. Proper dosing frequency depends on water temperature.
Here are some guidelines on dosing Nualgi in cooler weather to help your pond maintain a healthy bacteria population:
- Above 50° – Dose Nualgi Ponds every week.
- Between 40° & 50° – Dose Nualgi Ponds every other week.
- Below 40° – Dose Nualgi Ponds once every month.
- Below freezing – If your pond freezes, Nualgi Ponds will not be effective until the water temperature is again above freezing.
Something to keep in mind: Bacteria start to go dormant at colder temperatures. They are only 50% effective at 65° and just 25% effective below 50°.
Nualgi’s shelf-life is equal to 3 years from the date it was opened, provided it is not exposed to direct light.
To maximize the shelf-life, users should close the lid after drawing each dose and store the bottle away from direct light at room temperature
It is important to know the volume of water in your pond before dosing Nualgi. Nualgi is dosed at 1ml per 1000 gallons per week in ponds with algae. If possible, Nualgi should be dosed early in the morning. For ponds under 5000 gallons with good flow, Nualgi can be dosed directly into the skimmer or the waterfall or some other area of good flow. For larger ponds, dilute the dosage in a jar of pond water and pour it in the accessible parts of the pond by walking around the periphery.
No, you must turn the Iongen ionizer off when dosing Nualgi.
No, you should turn off the UV filter when dosing Nualgi. UV filters are designed to kill certain parasites and harmful bacteria. Unfortunately, they also kill beneficial bacteria, microbes and diatoms in the water column.
Nualgi is designed to create a healthy biological cycle by feeding friendly diatoms and growing beneficial organisms; the UV filter interferes with this process. So, fear not—you can safely turn off the UV filter and let Nualgi work its magic!
You may have to be patient, though. While some ponds clear within a few days, others can take several weeks. Results may not occur overnight, but soon you’ll have a pond that’s sparkling and clear.

We do not recommend concurrent dosage of Nualgi with other algae control products. Organisms required to naturally balance your pond may be negatively impacted by such products.
Yes, Nualgi + Beneficial Bacteria is completely safe.
You can use Nualgi while using medication although if the medication is such that it is set to kill microorganisms or can set back your biological filter reduce or cease use of Nualgi while using the Pond medication. Do not use with potassium permanganate concurrently with Nualgi.
Nualgi Pond should be dosed every 7 days.
1 ml per 1000 gallons diluted in 100 ml of water.
Physically remove dead leaves, debris and any algae that you can scoop out before starting the Nualgi dose. Extract the appropriate dose and dilute it 10 times in water. Pour the mixture directly into your pond while walking around the periphery. Diatoms are most active immediately after sunrise. Therefore dosing Nualgi in the morning is recommended.
Nualgi Ponds enhances the color and growth of your water garden due to enhanced water quality and availability of micro nutrients.
You may continue to apply currently used additives with Nualgi. Once your water is clear and nuisance algae has died out, you may experiment reducing dosage of such additives.
Nualgi overdose will result in excessive diatoms in your pond. Diatoms not consumed by zooplankton will settle to the bottom of your pond. Overdosing will not lead to a significant negative reaction but is simply a waste of the product.
Nitrate, nitrite and phosphate levels may be high. If not then bacteria being added is not sufficient and must be increased. Please contact us through our troubleshooting form for more assistance.
You may increase the Nualgi dose by half for 2 weeks. If conditions improve, dial back to recommended dose. Sometimes ponds need a little more or a little less than the recommended dose.
Foam is the result of algae dying off. Manually remove it with a fine mesh net so that it will not fall back to the water column.
Also, be sure to keep filter clear and flowing properly. Algae cells build up quickly in the filter.
Diatoms will out compete both algae and plants. However the sequence is that first other single celled algae are starved out and only later plants stop growing. The impact on plants depends on the dosage. Recommended Nualgi dose of 1ml per 1000 gallons per week ensures that only the algae is impacted and not the plants. If any impact is seen on the plants then the Nualgi dosage can be reduced.
There are a couple of reasons your water might turn brown while using Nualgi.
The first is adding too much Nualgi to your pond. Overdosing will create a diatom over-bloom which will discolor the water to a light brown.
Another possible reason is algae cell die-off combined with poor filtration. To determine which condition is causing your water to turn brown, fill a glass container with water to a minimum depth of 12 inches. Let the glass sit undisturbed for several hours, then examine the bottom of the glass. If the bottom is littered with debris, your problem is caused by a filtration issue. If you don’t see debris at the bottom, the brown water is caused by a diatom over-bloom. This can be easily addressed by holding off on your next dose of Nualgi till the brown tinge is gone.
Remember: a little Nualgi goes a long way!
While string algae do not pose a major danger to fish health, those long, messy strings are a nuisance that can ruin the natural beauty of your pond. We advise treating string algae with a combination of Nualgi and Beneficial Bacteria. You may have to be patient — it can take up to 16 weeks for the string algae to die out.
Yes, higher chlorine/chloramine levels in source water can affect water clarity by disrupting your pond’s nitrogen cycle from performing properly. nitrification process in the pond. If your pond is not looking crystal clear after more than a month of treating with Nualgi, high chlorine/chloramine levels could be the culprit.
How can I remove chlorine/chloramine from my water?
Before you add water to your pond, we recommend taking two steps:
- The day before, fill a bucket or 55 gallon drum with water and let it sit uncovered in the sun for a day to allow any chlorine present in the water to breakdown and “gas out” from the water.
- Before adding to the pond, we also advise treating with an efficient dechlorinator like NovAqua. An important note: NovAqua should not be used in ponds housing tadpoles. You may want to smother your tadpoles with love, but not with stress guard! 😉
- It can also be helpful to dose with dechlorinator just after it rains, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s dosing instructions.
BONUS TIP: We also recommend using a dechlorinator after heavy rain to help limit disruption to your pond’s water chemistry – but always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s dosing instructions.

Nualgi is a liquid additive containing 12 essential nutrients on a nano silica base to restore balance, improve water quality, and control nuisance algae in your pond. Nano silica is both a nutrient and a carrier that prevents the nutrients from reacting with each other.
Unlike traditional additives, Nualgi’s nano scale (measuring 5-100 nm) nutrients remain suspended for longer duration, disperse easily across the water column and are therefore “bio-available” to marine organisms.
Nualgi contains a special formulation of Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, Cu, Mo, B, S, Ca, Mg, P, K & Si developed for use in ponds and small bodies of water.
An innovative approach to improving pond balance, Nualgi Ponds works at the microscopic level to improve water clarity, reduce algae and keep aquatic plants and fish healthy. Nualgi starts a natural biological cycle by feeding beneficial diatoms. Diatoms are a key contributor to water clarity in our natural lakes, rivers and oceans, so you want plenty of them in your pond. Nualgi makes healthy diatoms grow at an explosive rate.
These diatoms then consume nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, outcompeting the nuisance algae for these elements because they photosynthesize earlier and in less light. The nuisance algae starve and the helpful diatoms thrive. Diatoms have other supportive attributes for your pond, too. Diatoms deliver oxygen to the bacteria who clean up the pond by consuming waste produced by fish and leftover food. They produce little bubbles of oxygen that keep the water healthy and sparkling. Your pond achieves a natural balance and you have healthy, vibrant fish with more food and oxygen.
Nualgi Ponds treats common problems faced by pond owners:
- Nuisance algae
- Lack of water clarity
- Fish kill or poor fish health

Nualgi is a patented nano silica based nano nutrient formula in size range of 5-100 nm. The silica becomes both the carrier for other nutrients and the nutrient by itself. It contains the important micronutrient -iron (0.01% to 50% of Fe) and other micronutrients- Mn, Zn, Co, Cu, Mo, B, S, Ca, Mg, P, K. Due to its nano size, Nualgi is able to pervade very small spaces in the subsurface and remain suspended in water. This allows particles to travel farther than larger, macro-sized particles therefore providing easy absorption.
Diatoms, one of the most common types of phytoplankton, are microscopic food power cells. They convert nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon dioxide into oxygen-rich organic compounds that create a healthy ecosystem in your pond.
The structure of diatom algae differs from that of cellulose-based algae like blue and green algae in important ways. Blue and green algae reduce photosynthesis in your pond, which harms the zooplankton and fish. Diatoms are photosynthesizing algae with a silica-based skeleton. Unlike blue and green algae, which form a layer on top of the water that cuts off light, diatoms are free-floating algae which sink to the bottom where they are eaten by zooplankton – and then the fish in your pond feed on the zooplankton.
By feeding those essential diatoms, Nualgi Ponds balances the natural marine food chain—and provides a zooplankton buffet for your fish!
Nano refers to the metric prefix for 10^-9 and means one-billionth of something. Nanoscience is the study of structures made small enough to take on new properties. For example, nano-particles of gold appear red in color and melt at significantly lower temperatures than normal gold slabs (~300 °C as compared to 1064 °C)
Yes you can use a water filter. Normal filters with foam type pads work in conjunction with Nualgi Ponds.
No. Nualgi has demonstrated an amplification of bio filters due to increased dissolved oxygen levels in the pond water column leading to larger aerobic bacteria and beneficial microbe colonies.
Nualgi has been tested in 40 degree F waters with delayed result as biological activity slows down at such temps. Ponds in cooler temps are normally clear. It’s the warmer waters that reveal problematic blooms of undesirable algae. With that said, the best temperature range to begin the use of nualgi would be 45F-50F although you could begin use at 35F.
Yes. It will work on all types of ponds whether lined with concrete, wood, plastic or preformed pond as well as earth bottoms.
For particularly bad cases of algae, results might be visible within hours and the pond may appear to get worse before it gets better in extreme cases. Take a deep breath, a few pictures for reference, and if you still don’t notice the effects at least a week later please contact us.
Every pond is different and occasionally it can take some time to see noticeable changes. Possible reasons for Nualgi not working in your pond could include over feeding of livestock or dosing of other nutrients. If you don’t see a significant change in water clarity and algae control in 4-6 weeks after starting the weekly Nualgi dose, contact us to seek troubleshooting support from our expert.
Diatoms increase the Dissolved Oxygen level of water uniformly across the storage area and thereby convert Anaerobic conditions to Aerobic conditions, thus reducing Methane emissions. Aerobic conditions promote growth of methanotroph bacteria which consumes methane.
The emission of hydrogen sulfide and others related odors are stopped when the Diatoms create aerobic conditions. Diatoms increase the dissolved oxygen level of water and therefore convert anaerobic conditions to aerobic conditions.

Traditional products contain either:
- Coarse particles with a diameter of 2,500 to 10,000 nanometers
- Fine particles with a diameter of 100 to 2,500 nanometers.
Nualgi particles are 5 to 50 nanometers in diameter (1 millimeter = 1,000,000 nanometers).
Nano particles are known to have different properties than larger sized particles of the same element . These tiny particles have a larger active surface area and can suspend themselves in liquid and are therefore more efficient by being bioavailable.
Bioavailability is a measurement of the rate and extent to which a drug or nutrient reaches the systemic circulation. For example a drug injected intravenously is much more bioavailable as compared to a drug ingested orally.
For plants and organisms, it is a significant scientific challenge to provide nutrients in bioavailable form. Nualgi is the only product of its kind that effectively addresses this challenge in a water body. It’s nutrient particles are small enough to suspend themselves in the water column and are therefore more available for diatom algae to bloom.
Nualgi Ponds has conducted trials with carpet algae over 15 months of continuous usage. We are happy to report that there has been no effect on carpet algae in any of our trials. While we can’t guarantee that there will never be any impact on carpet algae in the future, we can say, “So far, so great!”
See what our Nualgi friend Kim W. encountered when she came across a “furry like algae” on the walls of her pond.
PP and H2O2 are a quick fix for low DO levels in the water and are used to prevent fish death due to low DO (below 2mg/L at sunrise). For such emergencies, you may use PP and H2O2 while continuing to dose Nualgi after a few days of using PP and H2O2. Ponds being treated with Nualgi will generally maintain healthy DO levels thus avoiding the need for use of PP and H2O2.
Alum may be used if the nutrient levels are very high or if the N:P ratio is unfavorable to diatoms, say less than 5:1. One dose of Alum should be dosed before dosing Nualgi. If there is excess Alum that does it may bind with Nualgi. We therefore recommend a gap of few days between dosing Alum and Nualgi.
No, it does not. In fact, chlorine and chloramines will greatly inhibit Nualgi benefits.
Always treat for chlorine/chloramine.
A Secchi disk is a round metal object that’s painted black and white. The disk is attached to a string and then lowered into a pond until it’s at a depth where it can no longer be seen. This is called the Secchi Depth.
Purchase a Secchi Disk (Test Assured) from Nualgi Ponds Dealer & Friend: Cali Koi and start testing your Secchi Depth.
